Excellent Question Project: Who don't you want to be?

Who don’t you want to be?

You're normally not ask that type of question. As a society, we are more concerned with who you want to be. But the question of who you don’t want to be is a more enlightening question. It paints a future that is unacceptable to you…

  • “I don’t want to be in debt for the rest of my life.”
  • “I don’t want to be a bad father, husband or friend.”
  • “I don’t want to give someone else veto power over my life.”

I have wrestled with what I wanted to be for a long time. But when I decided what I did not want to be my life’s purpose became clear. And I began defining what I would not allow in my life and what I would pursue. That clarity is powerfully motivating.

You should take a moment, right now, and make a list of who you don’t you want to be. Create a list of what results are unacceptable. And let that list marinate. Once you are ready, begin to take action - not massive action. Just take small steps, build good habits that lead you to become the person you want to be.

Your life is about making impact and adding value to yourself as well as others. The only way you will recognize how to live a life on purpose is to understand who you refuse to be.
