“Star Wars” Saga Goes Blu-ray in 2011

Do I need to say anything else but — NICE!!

George Lucas announced today that all six Star Wars films will make their HD home theater debut on Blu-ray disc in fall next year. The box set will include the Special Edition remastered version of the original trilogy.

Lucas made the announcement at Star Wars Celebration V, the official convention for the movies and their related properties, and the 2011 launch for the Blu (Blu)-ray discs will mark the 35th anniversary of the release of Episode IV: A New Hope, the first Star Wars film. The discs will include documentaries, interviews, outtakes, deleted scenes and other footage unique to the new set.

Lucas’ explanation: The original theatrical editions would cost too much to convert to the high definition format. Much of the needed work was already done for the Special Edition remasters. Will you be buying Star Wars on Blu-ray, or will you skip it and watch the 3-minute LEGO version instead?

Evidence the iPhone Will Hit Verizon #mobile

It is only a matter of time until Apple decides to place the iPhone on a CDMA network. The financials are there — Verizon has 89 million subscribers. Let’s not forget that there is also an international factor. Both China and India are also have CDMA networks. China has 1.3 billion people and India has 1.1 billion people — that is a massive potential subscriber base.

I am still of the opinion that we will see an iPhone on T-Mobile (GSM network) before it’s placed on Verizon’s network.

There is also still the question of the AT&T exclusivity contract which does not expire until 2011. I am not certain if the details of the contract have been made public. If these rumors are true — then either Apple is breaking its contract (which I doubt) or there is some stipulation allowing Apple to place the iPhone on another MNOs network.

Evidence continues to mount to support expectations that Apple’s iPhone 4 will finally launch on Verizon this coming January. The latest: Sources close to Apple’s hardware suppliers say that Apple has ordered millions of CDMA chipsets from Qualcomm. CDMA is the wireless technology used by Verizon.

The report comes from TechCrunch contributor Steve Cheney, who says that the chipsets are due in December, implying a January launch for the Verizon device. This follows a rumor from seven months ago that Qualcomm had landed a deal to provide Apple with chips.

You might also recall that AT&T dedicated a significant portion of its recent SEC filing to assurances that it would be a-okay without U.S. iPhone exclusivity, a probable sign that the carrier is expecting to lose said exclusivity before the original 5-year deal runs its course.

Navigate the American Museum of Natural History #mobile

I just downloaded — AMNH Explorer from iTunes.

I have loved the American Museum of Natural History since I was a little boy. I still visit the museum a few time a year. I now have my own family so I will most certainly be taking advantage of the AMNH Explorer app.

The Museum has been newly outfitted with indoor Wi-Fi, and users can use the app [iTunes link] to pinpoint their location and receive turn-by-turn directions through the 45 permanent exhibition halls, theaters, restrooms, cafes and shops. In addition, the app can be used to access customized visual and audio tours, a fossil treasure hunt, and further information about more than 140 specimens and objects on display — all of which can easily be shared to e-mail, Facebook and Twitter.

“We wanted to put the latest mobile technology in visitors’ hands and provide them with an app that works not only as a personal navigation system but also gives an exciting look at our collections from anywhere in the world, connecting to social networks through email, Twitter, and Facebook,” said Linda Perry-Lube, senior vice president and chief digital officer at the Museum. “The task of building a system capable of mapping visitors’ locations inside of the Museum was monumental and has laid the groundwork for future development.”

Amplify’d from mashable.com

Google has released its second quarter 2010 earnings report. The centerpiece news is that revenue grew by 24% year-over-year to $6.82 billion — an impressive feat for the search giant. However, there was barely any growth from Q1 2010, when the company reported $6.77 billion in revenue.

  • Google-owned sites generated $4.5 billion in revenue, while AdSense and non-Google websites brought in $2.06 billion for the company — both grew by 23% from last year. International income sources represented 52% of total revenue.
